Security Raised for Champions League Quarter-Finals

The UEFA Champions League quarter-final games will have extra security this week in light of an alleged terror threat.

Leg one of the quarter-finals began yesterday, Tuesday 9 April, and will continue today. However, a threat published by a pro-Islamic State news outlet left players, fans, and organisers concerned.

“UEFA is aware of alleged terrorist threats made towards this week’s UEFA Champions League matches and is closely liaising with the authorities at the respective venues,” the organisation said in a statement released to media on Wednesday, 10 April.

“All matches are planned to go ahead as scheduled with appropriate security arrangements in place,” they added.

Arsenal played to a 2-2 stalemate against Bayern Munich in England last night, while Manchester City reached a 3-3 draw against hosts Real Madrid in Spain. Both matches went off without a hitch.

Pilar Alegría, Spain’s sports minister, deployed more than 2 000 police and civil guard officers to ensure the safety of their citizens.

There are two more matches scheduled for today: the first in Paris, France between Paris-Saint Germain and Barcelona, and the second in Madrid, Spain between Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
